In 2009, Nicolas Dessaux asked a simple question: if a one-line stat block is enough for a monster in a D&D module, why not for a player character? Searchers of the Unknown was born — a minimalist RPG that spawned dozens of hacks and became an OSR classic.

SotU Solo is a solo hack of that game. The idea: take that ultra-light philosophy and build a complete solo game around it. Not a clumsy adaptation of a multiplayer system — something designed from the ground up for one player.

FAST & EASY RULES

The core of the rules is very simple. Each turn, you roll 3 dice that you assign as you wish:

• the first one is used to advance the monsters in the room
• the second one allows you to load your abilities
• the third one represents your movement capability

 

HURRY UP!

The power of the monsters increases as time goes by! If you want to complete the game at 100% you will need a dose of luck but also a lot of brain power. Warning: undead are resurrected every time you return to a room

I introduce you to a "tool-assisted" solo roleplaying game Dragonbones Sandbox & Dungeon crawl. In the previous post, I presented you Dragonbones, a Dungeons and Dragons hack.The system fits on a sheet of paper and pushes the minimalism of the game to the extreme.

While keeping the same basics, it seemed to me that we could extend the support to create a really complete solo gaming experience.
