"Yes, but" "No, but" - Some interpretation ideas to thicken the story

In recent role-playing games such as The Wandering Knight, the use of the concept of "degree of success" is common. While total success/failure is easy enough to interpret, the partial success degree, the "yes/no but", the "success but add a complication" is often open to interpretation.

What is this "complication"? You succeeded, but there is another problem. You have failed, but not completely.

In a traditional game, a partial success can be interpreted as a success with a significant loss of resources (injury, use of potions, father of an item...). In narrative games, however, the use of resources takes a back seat. Therefore, another strategy must be imagined.

Technically a partial success/failure will indicate an unresolved situation to the advantage of the opponent/character.

It is possible to use these results to enrich the narrative by completely changing the gameplay. You can also decide that yes, but and no, but are actually a tie. In this case, let's change the setting and raise the stakes

Here are some ideas about fight situations.

You/your opponent...
11. Find a better weapon (sword, a gun)
12. Drops his weapon/is prevented from using his weapon
13. Have the opportunity to throw a projectile as a free action (rock, spear, knives...)
14. Find a vehicle to chase the other
15. Have been poisoned
16. Find a potion

You/your opponent learn...
21. The other one' s weakness
22. Where the treasure/princess is hidden
23. The location of a powerfull artifact
24. How to perform a new technique
25. How to use a magic scroll
26. How to control the dungeon trap system

Location change (Floor collapses/wall breaks) and someone/everyone...
31. Falls into a lion's den
32. Falls on a platform surrounded by lava
33. Continue the fight in a room full of traps
34. Can release a monster on the other
35. Continuent le combat dans un système de machines (wagons, forge...)
36. Continue the fight outside on a ledge where any fall is deadly

Heres come a new challenger...
41. Other minions arrive in the room
42. A rival/neutral npc arrive (police...)
43. Killer bees are released
44. A random big one awake
45. A demonic portal opens and small demons come out
46. We discover that another party of heroes is fighting in the dungeon for other reasons

A magic changes the rules
51. Gravity reverses
52. Teleporters are activated
53. An anti-magic bubble covers the room
54. The walls become magnetic and attract iron
55. A slippery slime covers the floor
56. A spell of paralysis affects everyone

inexpected event
61. The ceiling collapses
62. The room starts to flood
63. The room start to fill with toxic gas
64. The bomb/a magic threatens to explode
65. The coveted artifact is destroyed/lost
66. The whole tower starts to collapse
