Pirates of vanishing waters, a business card rpg
Did you know that there is even more minimalist than a one-page rpg? It's the business card rpg!
I didn't know it until I came across RATKING by Trollish Delver Games. Beyond the minimalist aspect that seduced me right away, I loved the very particular mechanism of this game. In the Ratking, there is the concept of Chaos: every day, the DM rolls 1d6.
- 1-3: monsters are stronger
- 4-6: characters are stronger
I like it when the gameplay changes. It brings a breath of fresh air to the game. So, I thought, "Why not go further? Much further?" (maybe a little too far :)
At first, I wanted to make a Horror Dnd
- 1-3: The Tarrasque awakens. Flee poor mortals!
- 4-6: The Tarrasque goes back to sleep. Loot, drink, feast!
Funny, isn't it?
In the end, I didn't keep this idea. Here is Pirates of Vanishing Waters
The idea is that the players play on a background that can change from one moment to another
- 1-3: the ocean fills up
- 4-6: the ocean empties
When the ocean is full, we are in a normal pirate rpg game. But at any moment, the ocean can drain itself. Ships slowly run aground on a sandy desert. Islands have become impassable mountains. The underwater life awakens: amphibian monsters, fish-men able to live underwater as well as in the air, ruins of an ancient civilization, adapted boats with wheels or beasts that pull them...
Maybe a war between the world above and the world below...
All these vapors of inspiration intoxicate me!
...
Yeah, maybe a little too far for just a credit card game :)
