Since the beginning of the solo rpg we have seen a whole range of game master generators. The most famous being of course Mythic Role Playing.
The idea of the game master simulator is twofold:
To simulate the role of storyteller of the Game master: To obtain randomness, to recreate the surprise, to generate a story
To simulate the role of referee of the Game master: To obtain descisions, resolutions of situation
But I ask the community: Has anyone ever tried to play the role of the game master and simulate the players?
This is how I see it:
- you create a background
- You create a dungeon/quest
- You release a group of characters into that universe and watch them evolve
The surprise comes from how the characters will react.
Let's take the example of a known universe: Robin Hood (#No time to create a background? Duplicate one!)
- A missing king
- A kingdom ruled by a tyrannical usurper
- Rebels in the forest
Add one or two fantastic elements to make the background more complex and less manichean:
- Lizardmen from the swamps who threaten humans.
- The tyrannical usurper oppresses the people to have enough resources to fight against these lizardmen and the brigands of the forest
Throw a group of characters into this and see how the situation develops.
Two notes:
The characters' contribution must be significant. By intervening in a precarious balance situation, their involvement should tip the balance
The notion of a rigid DnD-like alignment is important here
It is likely that loyal characters will ally themselves with Prince John at first, while characters who reject order will side with the rebels.
Evil characters will seek their personal gain, no matter what the consequences on the background
Now we have to build the simulator!
